Do Situps – That's What They Say, But Are They Worth It?
Sadly, I hate to say this but getting on the floor and doing countless amounts of situps is a waste of your time. Not saying the some people can’t benefit from a couple of them but most people are not in the shape to where situps actually help.

Sorry ladies but you are not going to get stomach like these women have by doing situps! This is a myth as situps only help to strength and build your core muscles nothing else. If you looking to lose a pant or dress size calorie intake is the key.
Do You Need Situps?
Well first the question should be what is your goal? I mean do you have about 10-25lbs to lose? Are you in good shape and just want to work on building and toning your abs muscles. You see you don’t need situps if your plan is to try and have visible abs or a flat stomach. This is what too many waste time on as situps are not going to help accomplish this.
What Are Situps Good For
The answer to this is quite simple yet it may be hard for some to actually believe. Situps aren’t good for anything, and actually they maybe more harmful to you than anything. I know this may hard for you to believe but it’s true. One problem for sure is the way most people curl their backs when doing situps in the first place. This only helps in ruining your posture which will only make you look shorter.
Do This Instead
It’s a simple point I make repeatedly on my site when it comes to a flatter stomach, and that’s just simply for you to eat less. Healthier is better but the main focus in the beginning is just too actually eat a lot less food than you are already consuming. This is the fast most efficient way for you to get a flatter stomach.
Exercises I Recommend
There are only a few exercises that I even recommend doing for abs and even these are for someone who is already close to their goal of visible abs or a flatter stomach. However the one I do recommend frequently is the plank. Plank exercises are one of the best moves to strengthen your core, which comprises not only your abdominal muscles, but also the muscles of the back, hips, and pelvic floor. But even this exercise will not help you build a six pack set of abs.
My Trainer Has Me Doing Them
I hear this a lot from people who have trainers that consistently have them working their core muscles and doing situps. My question to you is, “is it working and are your abs more visible?” You have to ask the right question to your trainer when it comes to your abs and the purpose of core workouts and situps. It’s not to make them visible but instead to make them stronger and stable and if that is you goal continue doing them. If your goal is to get a smaller waist just focus on eating less calories based on daily intake.
NOTE: I will do a post on what is a person’s daily recommended calorie intake in the future. For some of you it will be unbelievable as to the amount you truly should be eating to lose weight. Also your calorie intake is based on your height and I will go into that also.

I never situp. Plank, side plank, one arm plank is all I do. Great for strengthening the core. I do have abdominals which are defined but that’s all from nutrition.
Great you are getting rid of these myths about Abs.
@Raymond
Thanks! I myself never do anything other then plank and side planks also. I have gotten it to almost four minutes hold time thanks to Rusty, but like you stated nutrition is key if you wish to see them.
Great post.
It’s a shame that there is heavy focus on exterior abdominals.
Of course, directly working abs to make them ‘visible’ Is within the same realm of fantasy that you can ‘spot-reduce’ fat on your waistline by doing a million situps!
It’s articles like this that will hopefully enlighten those that were doubtful

Thanks for the post Clint! For some reason many believe that just because that work an area they can make it visible without dieting or lose fat. Plus “spot-fat reducing” is totally just a myth as your body chose where it desires to burn the fat from not you!
