Have you ever been told that you need to eat at least 6 meals per day to lose weight? If so you are like so many other women out there who have been led to think that they are not eating enough meals per day. The thought concept behind this is that if you eat more frequently you will help to speed up your metabolism. So basically people will tell you that the reason you are gaining weight is because you are not eating the six required meals.
Why Eating 6 Meals per Day Is Bad
First of all any women eating six meals per day is probably going to be gaining weight or struggling trying to fit in all her meals. Just think how often you will be eating throughout your busy day at work. It is going to nearly impossible to keep up with all your meal times and not miss anything.
The problem with your weight loss in the first place is that you are eating too many calories and not burning enough. Now if you are eating 6 meals per day with the average meal about 400-500 you are easily eating 3000 calories. Don’t expect to see weight loss if you eat that many times per day and have meals with that many calories.

I’m not saying that eating 6 times per day doesn’t work for some women but those women have it down to a science. They pack every meal, have reminders to when they need to eat and for the most part have been doing it for so long it’s a routine.
For most women it’s a task just to fix breakfast every morning and make sure they pack a lunch. Can you imagine trying to prepare six meals every day? The average women based on their age, height, etc. needs around 1750-1900 calories to maintain their current weight. If you eat six meals per day I can almost promise you that you will be over those calories.
There are not too many meals you can prepare or have that are going to be below 200-300 calories. If you do find them they are going to be something like string cheese, fruit and water, and usually they just seem to make you even hungrier.
Let’s Look At the Numbers
So let’s just say in order to lose weight you need to eat roughly 1600 calories per day. If you were to look at eating six meals every day each meal would consist of about 267 calories.
1,600 calories divided by 6 meals = 267 calories per meal (come on now let’s be realistic here!)
If you try this you will simply be driving yourself NUTS! Then when you actually start gaining weight you won’t even know the reason why. A diet that consists of eating every few hours is not the best approach for women looking to lose weight. I understand that many have been told this but really it just doesn’t add up.
An alternative Instead of Eating So Many Times
Well I think that this is simple and just plain logical…why not eat fewer meals. Let’s just say you need those same 1600 calories to lose weight however instead of eating 6 meals you only eat 2-3. If you only eat 3 meals you can now have meals that are around 500-600 calories.
One meal could be something that 250 calories and you would still have two meal of nice size for later on. So for lunch and dinner you would be able to have meals that were up to 700 calories and still be under your calories for the day.

If you are trying to lose weight you don’t need to eat every few hours. The key is simply eating fewer calories throughout the day so that the total is below what you need. For some women eating six meals per day actually works. I just saying not everyone has the time and the schedule that will allow them to do this. To be honest I think most women would prefer being able to enjoy a nice meal versus a lot of smaller ones.
